Bypassing the “Human” Problem

Bypassing the “Human” Problem

The most fascinating thing about Catherine Flowers’ talk in my opinion was her attitude towards people that do not believe in climate change. We often talk about how we need science or proof to “convince” people that change is among us. However, changing these people’s minds is really not a huge priority for her. When Catherine speaks to skeptics about climate change, she uses examples and starts the conversation in order to make them think about changes they’ve experienced. Catherine never pushes them if they are not convinced, but rather speaks in words they can understand in order to allow them to use their own rationale on the issue.

Catherine rather focuses on the youth since they are much more open minded and accepting of science and the need to change. The youth have not settled are constantly trying new things and changing. In addition, it is our generation who will be living in this Green Earth, chaos with underwater cities and mass relocation. We need to take charge and encourage change. If 90% of millennials believe in climate change, it will no longer be a partisan issue as the next generation will be all in favor and the government will be able to enact policy to enforce change.

Thus, when designing the future, climate education will be key. Horace Mann thought education and public schools were important because it allows us to mold children during their development. We should be molding our youth to be ecological as well. When they clean the table as a chore, they should be sorting out recycling and compost. If the children start early, it will become second nature and 80-year old Aunt Janet and Uncle Joe will start recycling in order to “feel young again”.
