What is GEM?

GEM is a Mathematics Program and Research Study through Duke University. The free program will include Saturday math enrichment workshops that will focus on encouraging young students to explore math. At these workshops, participants will work on challenging puzzles to build problem solving skills and engage with math outside of the standard school curriculum. Participants will also discuss gender stereotypes and the current environment for women in math.

 Where?

We will  have summer workshops in Summer 2025. Monday through Friday, June 16 – June 27

Where?  Duke University, Gross Hall.

Who?  A team of professors, graduate students, and undergraduates from Duke University will organize and lead the workshops. To learn more about the team, see our team members page.

Who should join?  The program is open to all middle schoolers in the Durham Public School District. We will accept approximately 20 applicants. Acceptance into the program is not based on demonstrated math achievement. This program is both for students who are excited about math as well as those who feel uncertain about math or want extra math practice.
