About Us
What is GEM?
GEM is a Mathematics Program and Research Study through Duke University. The free program will include Saturday math enrichment workshops that will focus on encouraging young women to explore math. At these workshops, participants will work on challenging puzzles to build problem solving skills and engage with math outside of the standard school curriculum. Participants will also discuss gender stereotypes and the current environment for women in math.
When? Spring 2024 workshops take place on:
Jan 13, 20, 27, Feb 10, 17, 24, March 2, and April 6
Each workshop runs from 2-4 pm.
We will also have summer workshops in Summer 2024. Monday through Friday, June 17 – June 28
Where? Duke University, Gross Hall.
Who? A team of professors, graduate students, and undergraduates from Duke University will organize and lead the workshops. To learn more about the team, see our team members page.
Who should join? The program is open to all middle school girls in the Durham Public School District. We will accept approximately 60 applicants. Acceptance into the program is not based on demonstrated math achievement. This program is both for girls who are excited about math as well as girls who feel uncertain about math or want extra math practice.
