Maria obtained her MSc in Biology from the University of Naples “Federico II”, Italy. During her thesis in the Di Schiavi lab, she studied mutant genes linked to Parkinson-like diseases using C. elegans. She then moved to Switzerland to pursue her PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Lausanne in the lab of Dr. Neukomm. Awarded a prestigious JSPS Fellowship, co-funded by Leading House ETH Zürich, her research focused on isolating and characterizing mRNAs locally translated involved in preserving synaptic function in a Drosophila model of impaired Wallerian degeneration. In September 2024, she joined the Eroglu Lab as a postdoctoral researcher to investigate the role of astrocytes in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Outside work, she enjoys outdoor activities, painting, cooking, and video-chatting with her nephews.
