How it works

Are you a new member of the Duke Habitat for Humanity Club? Answers to many of our commonly asked questions are found below.

What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the United States and in more than 70 countries around the world. Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat works toward our vision by building strength, stability and self-reliance in partnership with people and families in need of a decent and affordable home.

How do I sign up for a build?

Durham Habitat hosts volunteer opportunities throughout the year. In collaboration with Duke Habitat, Durham Habitat reserve select build days for student volunteers, which take place during the spring and fall semesters.

Information about student build days will be announced by email, through the Duke Habitat email list. To join the email distribution list, please contact Duke Habitat, as indicated on the Contact tab of this website.

Students are welcome to join Durham Habitat on their own, on non-Duke build days and at other build sites. Visit the Durham Habitat website to learn more about these opportunities.

How do I get to a build?

As our volunteer sites are off-campus in Durham, the Duke Habitat for Humanity Club will provide transportation for all students who need a ride. These rides are provided by other student volunteers who have cars on campus or, if necessary, by Ubers. Uber Fares will be reimbursed by the club.
