Lori Orlando, MD MHS appointed to Associate Professor!

Lori A. Orlando, MD MHS was appointed Associate Professor, Track IV, effective January 1, 2014. Lori is a clinician, researcher, mentor and educator who has practiced women’s health and preventive medicine and has performed studies in several related areas, including collection and assessment of family history to improve care. Congratulations, Lori!

George Jackson, PhD appointed to Associate Professor!

George L. Jackson, PhD was appointed Associate Professor, Track V, effective January 1, 2014. George is a health care epidemiologist who has established an impressive track record of nationally recognized research and funding in the areas of implementation science with a focus on improving the structures, processes and outcomes of care among patients with hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. Congratulations, George!

Dr. Stewart Alexander’s JAMA Pediatrics Paper Receives National Attention

Stewart Alexander, PhD published his paper  “Sexuality Talk During Adolescent Health Maintenance Visits” in JAMA Pediatrics this week, and he has received national attention from NBC news, ABC news, NPR and numerous other media outlets. His study directly observed discussions about sexuality between adolescents and their health care providers. Collaborating GIM co-authors included Rowena Dolor, MD and James Tulsky, MD. Congratulations, Stewart!

Dr. David Simel Honored with Congressional Recognition Award

David Simel, MD was honored on December 19, 2013 with a Congressional Recognition Award for his outstanding service to Veterans by Congressman Mike McIntyre. This is a wonderful and fitting testament to the impact David has had on the lives of countless veterans, colleagues, and trainees over the years. Congratulations on this prestigious and well-deserved recognition, David!!

Dr. Kelli Allen Receives PCORI Award to Study Knee Osteoarthritis

Kelli Allen, PhD received a PCORI award to study knee osteoarthritis. The grant, entitled, “Physical Therapy vs. Internet-Based Exercise Training for Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis” will fund a study to compare the effectiveness of practical interventions to improve patient centered outcomes including lower extremity pain, stiffness, and function. This was a highly competitive round of PCORI funding, with only 11% of applications receiving funding. Congratulations, Kelli!

Dr. Lesley Curtis promoted to Full Professor!

Lesley H. Curtis, PhD was promoted to Full Professor of Medicine by the Duke University School of Medicine Board of Trustees on December 1, 2013! Her appointment to this highest academic rank reflects the tremendous impact of her work to improve human health, her continuous exemplary scholarship, and the extraordinarily high esteem she has garnered as a preeminent scholar among her peers and scholars nationally and internationally. Dr. Curtis has spent her stellar career advancing the health of patients with cardiovascular disease, eye disease, and other chronic diseases through her conduct of numerous studies employing methods in health services research and policy, clinical and comparative effectiveness, pharmacoepidemiology, and health outcomes. She has  led national and international efforts to develop and refine advanced methods for the analysis of large secondary data sets. She has led numerous studies funded by NIH, AHRQ, and others, and her work has been featured in the most widely recognized international journals. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition for your truly outstanding achievements,  Dr. Curtis!

Southern Society of General Internal Medicine Seeking Panel Mentors

The Southern Society of General Internal Medicine is inviting faculty members at the rank of assistant professor or above to participate as a Panel Mentor at this year’s regional meeting in New Orleans, February 20-22, 2014.  Since its inception seven years ago, Panel Mentoring has been highly rated by attendees, and demand has grown for these sessions. When you attend the Southern SGIM meeting, we hope that you can give 1.5 hours (or more, if willing) of your time to be a mentor.  You will be sharing your experience and giving advice to three SSGIM members (or associates) for 3 thirty minute sessions.  If you are interested, please email  Dr. Paul Chelminski (paul_chelminski@unc.edu) and Dr. Calvin Thigpen (sthigpen@umc.edu) by January 15, 2014.
