Welcome to the Cryo-HydrO Observation Leaders (COOL) Lab at Duke University!
Our research investigates how climate change affects dynamic cryospheric and hydrologic processes in the Arctic and globally. We are especially interested in northern lake and river dynamics, Arctic coastal environmental change, and seasonal variations in surface water storage. Our research primarily uses satellite data, especially new satellite technologies like Planet, ICESat-2, and SWOT, but we also conduct fieldwork to validate and better interpret satellite-derived trends. We are proud to be a part of the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke, a large, leading environmental school which houses environmental research and education spanning the social, biological, and physical sciences.
The COOL Lab is led by Dr. Sarah Cooley, who is an Assistant Professor of Planetary Health in the Division of Earth and Climate Sciences at the Nicholas School. From 2021-2024, Sarah was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Oregon. Sarah is especially passionate about all things Arctic, new satellite technologies, and making academia a more accessible, healthy and inclusive space for all.
