Jon Lorsch, Director of NIGMS, to give special lecture: “Catalyzing the Modernization of Graduate Education in Biomedical Sciences” on October 27

Dr. Jon Lorsch, Director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health, will visit Duke on Thursday, October 27 to give a special lecture titled “Catalyzing the Modernization of Graduate Education in the Biomedical Sciences”. The lecture will be at 3pm in Love Auditorium in the LSRC. Jon will also hold separate Q&A sessions for faculty and students earlier in the day (details forthcoming).

WiSE hosting discussion panel: “If I Knew Then What I Know Now”

WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering) will be hosting their first event of the year, “If I Knew Then What I Know Now”, on September 14 @ 5:30pm in Bio Sci 111. There will be a panel discussion featuring 4th and 5th year PhD students discussing their successes and hardships throughout their academic career at Duke. While this is generally aimed at first years, everyone is welcome! Dinner will be provided, please RSVP here.

Dr. Bruce Alberts Presents National Perspectives in Science Annual Lecture hosted by the Office of Biomedical Graduate Diversity

The National Perspectives in Science Annual Lecture hosted by the Office of Biomedical Graduate Diversity will be held on Tuesday, May 17th at 4PM in the Trent Semans Center Great Hall. This year’s keynote address, The Problems and Challenges in Biomedical Sciences: Keeping Science Healthy”, will be delivered by Dr. Bruce Alberts, the UCSF Chancellor’s Leadership Chair in Biochemistry and Biophysics for Science and Education. Dr. Alberts was also the recipient of the National Medal of Science in 2014, past president of the National Academy of Sciences (1993-2005), former Editor-in-Chief of Science (2008-2013), and one of the original authors of The Molecular Biology of the Cell. All Duke faculty, students, staff, and non-Duke affiliates are welcome to attend. Immediately following the seminar, light refreshments will be served at a reception from 5-6pm in the Atrium directly outside of the Great Hall.

WiSE Symposium – Friday, April 29

WiSE is excited to announce the program for our 2016 Research Symposium. There will be a keynote address, student talks/posters, and a panel discussion. RCR credit will be given for the keynote address and the panel discussion. Learn about the event and apply to give a poster or talk below!

12-1 pm: Keynote Address by Dr. Desdamona Rios, University of Houston-Clear Lake (Eligible for RCR credit! Lunch provided)

Title: Intersectionality, invisibility and outsider-within standpoints in STEM

Dr. Desdamona Rios is assistant professor of Psychology and Women’s Studies at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She holds a joint doctorate in Psychology and Women’s Studies from the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, Dr. Rios worked on Michigan’s ADVANCE program as well as the Global Feminisms Project, an international archival project that documents women’s leadership. In addition to developing programs to promote institutional change at UHCL, her current projects examine the relationship between culturally relevant cues in academic contexts for at-risk Hispanic American high school students and LGBT college students. She has also published work on her pedagogical practices, including the importance of making visible the accomplishments of marginalized groups across course curricula. She currently serves as consulting editor for Psychology of Women Quarterly, the top journal for feminist psychology, and was recently awarded by the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (American Psychological Association, Division 9) a national teaching award recognizing her innovative approaches for teaching intersectionality theory across the psychology curriculum.

apply to present your research at the symposium! The WiSE Symposium is a great opportunity to share your work with a diverse scientific audience in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Your Questions About Sexual Misconduct Answered: Q&A Session with the Experts

As graduate and professional students we are put in a unique position regarding sexual misconduct, distinct from both the undergraduates and the staff and faculty. Some instances can be handled internally whereas others may be best suited externally. How might you deal with sexual misconduct in your department or in your personal life? What are your resources, options, and the various pros and cons? This Q&A panel and discussion session is intended to answer your questions — those you have and those you may not realize you have — about your options and areas of concern regarding sexual misconduct within your campus life, personal life, or both.

Our panelists are
– Victoria Krebs, Associate Dean of Students and Title IX Outreach and Response at Duke
– Janice Humphreys, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Nursing with expertise in women’s health and interest in intimate partner violence, PTSD, and lifetime trauma exposure among others
– Kate Selby, Sexual Assault Services Coordinator at the Durham Crisis Response Center
