Inclusive Language

When thinking about how to best represent the diversity of our alumni, students, faculty, and staff, we refer to Duke’s Inclusive Language Guide (PDF, 110 KB). It offers guidance on language related to gender, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, and more.

That is a living document subject to revision. If further clarification is needed, we also refer to guides such as Emerson’s Guidelines for Inclusive Language and Google’s Inclusive Marketing resources.

It is best practice to ask the subject’s identification preferences before any story is published.
