Duke Degrees, School and Parent Affiliations

AED lists degrees conferred by our alumni in a brief format that is easily recognizable by any external audience.

Bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees are the most common, so we only list a date without an abbreviation in all marketing materials, print, and web: Bella Swan ’19 (do not write Bella Swan A.B.’19 or Bella Swan B.S.’19). However, the degrees are allowed on nametags.

When an alum receives two degrees (that are not a joint degree) in the same year, list the degrees in alphabetical order: Sonia McDonald B.S.N.’49, M.B.A.’49.

If additional context is needed to describe alumni and their connection with Duke University beyond a degree, please expand upon their experience in running text (sentence form). For example: Nancy R. Anderson, a 1968 graduate of the Woman’s College.

Please note the use of periods in degree abbreviations, as well as the use of a true apostrophe.

Pro tip: Microsoft software, such as Word and Outlook will auto-correct the apostrophe (’) to an opening single quotation mark (‛). To type the apostrophe:

  • Type 19’85 and then delete the 19.
  • Type ‛’ and delete the first quote symbol.
  • Use the keyboard commands Alt + 0 1 4 6 (Windows) or Option + Shift + ] (Mac).
