I have always wanted to participate in a research program, but I wasn’t sure whether that time would be this summer. Today, I feel so privileged to be a part of the Howard Hughes Research Fellows program working on a research field of my interest. My days are now filled with excitement in learning more about cryptococcus meningitis and learning different biology techniques using advanced lab equipments I hardly saw in the past.
I expect to enhance my scientific knowledge over the course of this summer. Every day after lab time, I reflect on what I learnt which makes eager to even learn more. My mentors are so dedicated in helping me, and I appreciate how they guide me with so much passion. I already feel part of the team and I definitely have a lot to look forward to. It’s been just a week, but it feels like I have known my lab members for a long time.
During my research experience, I expect to grow, strengthen my interpersonal skills as well as build an excellent foundation for my career path. Every morning since the program started, I wake up looking forward to something new. And given my one week experience I have had in the lab so far, I’m more confident than ever that research on infectious is something I want to devote my time doing in the future.
As a pre-med student interested in a biology and global health double major, I look forward to my research experience being a big part of my tomorrow, my future career since I’m particularly interested in participating in an MD/ P.h.D program after acquiring my undergraduate degree. I expect my summer research experience to be very strong foundation for my future career, a door to more research opportunities I have always dreamed of and I can see that the Howard Hughes Research fellows program will play an important part of my tomorrow.
I know 8 weeks isn’t a lot of time, but it’s enough time for me to grow into a better person, a dedicated future doctor and young scientist. I look forward to forming a strong network with Howard Hughes Fellows, my mentors, and lab teammates and contribute to scientific research in the division of infectious diseases.
