My Contribution

By: Danielle Dawes

I am really excited to explore the world of research this summer. I have never participated in research before, and I have spent limited time in the lab. I am curious to see what goes into all these discoveries and how the process works. I have only read about all the amazing outcomes of research, but I want to be able to experience first-hand what is all about. I’m excited broaden my knowledge and turn my free time this summer into something productive. I think it is amazing that I get the opportunity to contribute to my lab and help even if it’s just one small part. I expect to look back on this summer and feel like I have done something meaningful.

I’m not sure exactly what I want to do after college, but definitely something related to Biomedical Engineering. I am ready to enter the path to start solving real world problems. My goal in life has always been to help people. I want to make life better for others by engineering products that will further advance the medical field. The world of specialized medicine and medical tools is on the path to transform peoples’ lives, and I want to be a part of it. I am working in a tissue engineering lab this summer, so I will get to learn about one branch of the BME field. I hope to discover a possible career path, or at least learn more about Biomedical Engineering opportunities.

Although I am excited for the summer, I am also nervous. I feel like I know nothing. I don’t want to mess any of the experiments up or make a fool of myself. The first day I was so intimidated walking into my lab seeing hazard signs and freezers full of tubes of who knows what. Everyone was intensely working on their projects, and I was scared to touch anything or get in anyone’s way. It’s only been one week, but I already feel so much more comfortable in my lab. I have started to notice how much easier it is to learn new material when you can actually apply it first-hand. I’ve learned so much in such a short amount of time, so I can’t wait to see where I’m at in 8 weeks.
