Nanofibers!

By: Vinicius Xie Fu

My day starts at around 10:30 am after the morning seminars and meetings. Some days are more eventful and “fun” than others. If not doing any experiments I’ll probably be at my desk analyzing images. From far away, they look like colorful little worms, but they are just peptide fibers with fluorophores. They can be really cute sometimes, until you start dreaming with them. I guess it’s just part of the process.  For wet lab, I do a lot of solutions: I’ve become proficient in diluting PBS from 10x to 1x or calculating how much peptide we need for the reaction. I’ve also learned that a lot of lab work involves waiting. During these periods, I like to read some papers and review protocols. And because much of the work we do involves immunology, I still have a lot to read and learn. At the end of the day, I usually collect all the data I got and organize my lab notebook for easy consultation in the future. To be 100% honest, I also do some talking during the day with the other people from the lab and try to have fun!

  1. Nice! Sounds like you are making really good use of the “waiting time” in the lab which, like you mentioned, can be a lot. I think it’s great that you are talking with people in the lab too — ask if you can shadow one of their experiments if you want to 🙂
When you close your eyes and see nano fibers, you know you’re on your way to being a scientist!
