Day in the Lab

By: Lisa Garnier

I normally wake up at 7:30, or at least I try to. After rolling in my bed for a while and painfully getting up, I get ready to head to our BSURF seminar (on the days that we don’t have seminars I normally get to lab at 10). After the seminar I walk towards Twinnie’s and I consider getting a coffee. However, that would be my second coffee of the day, so I brush it off and head upstairs to my lab.

Once in the lab, I go over to my desk and leave my bag. Then, I head over to my mentor’s bay and I put gloves on. In that moment, Dahlia and I have a quick morning debrief where she tells me what we are going to do that day and she also brings up anything we did the day before and anything that may have gone wrong.

After the debrief, I ask Dahlia a thousand questions about the procedures even though I have done them multiple times before. Normally, my work is comprised of mini prep kits, ligating oligos, plating, and inoculating colonies. Recently, I’ve had to measure the concentration of nucleic acid in eluted DNA using the nano drop machine. Now, if any of you have done any of these procedures, you know that sometimes you have to wait for periods of time while cells thaw or recover. During that free time I go to my desk and catch up on some reading, or I go grab a quick bite in WU. After lunch (and coffeee), I go back to the lab and continue doing my work for the day. Sometimes my days end earlier and sometimes they end later, it just depends on the procedures of the day.
