Exploring Biology: A Summer of Scientific Growth

By: Wigdan Hissein

Expectations for the BSURF summer, what I am hoping to get out of it, & what I am concerned about:

I am incredibly excited about this upcoming BSURF summer! I have lots of expectations and look forward to a plethora of experiences while being placed in Dr. Gustavo Silva’s lab for 8 weeks. In the Silva Lab, I plan to collaborate with fellow members to investigate how ubiquitin controls cellar response to oxidative stress. Particularly, our goal is to understand the unique roles played by ubiquitin to in hopes to advance our understanding of how ubiquitination and oxidative stress impact cellular function and response. Throughout this journey, I anticipate gaining valuable scientific knowledge and enhancing my science and research skills significantly. This hands-on experience will allow me to delve into the fascinating world of biology— applying theoretical concepts to practical experiments and projects.

My ultimate goal is to learn a lot during this program and to ask a LOT of questions. The chance to work alongside experienced and skillful researchers and scientists in a lab setting is invaluable to me and will provide me with an abundance of practical skills that I can carry forward in my academic and professional journey!

Additionally, I look forward to meeting new people and building close friendships with my fellow BSURFers. As a community who share a passion for science, I look forward to all of the fun outings and events we have planned this summer. Whether it’s about science, scriptures, or soccer— each and every moment I get to spend with the brilliant individuals in this program will be worthwhile. I believe the connections and friendships I gain from BSURF will extend beyond the program and serve as a foundation for future collaborations and networking opportunities.

Overall, my expectations for BSURF this summer revolve around acquiring scientific knowledge, strengthening my skills and passion for science and research, and building close bonds with other talented individuals. I am eager to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead, and can hardly wait to see what the near future holds…

To my fellow BSURFers reading this… I wish you the best of luck this summer and I look forward to learning about your fascinating projects during our final poster presentation!!

  1. I love your willingness to ask questions and focus on community! Asking questions is ultimately what science is all about, but commonly many are so worried about seeming dumb or uninformed to even ask. Being brave enough to not worry about these things is such a valuable trait, in my opinion. Also, research is a community activity, and I appreciate that you mention your excitement for collaboration and building social bonds.
