Today I was very lucky to sit down with my PI Dr. Gersbach and talk about science and career, as well as his lovely children and Durham Bulls Game. Even though I sometimes ask questions that are not related at all, Dr. Gersbach was always patient and enthusiastic. The interview covers so many topics that I cannot recount all of them in this blog, but the most important revelation comes when I asked him about his best moment in science. While I was expecting his answer to be a particular moment when he made a huge discovery, he said “the best moment is the next moment.” At first I didn’t understand what he meant, but now its meaning becomes clearer and clearer as I think about that sentence. Science is all about finding or trying something new. It is the creativity of science that intrigues so many scientists. For researchers there might not be dramatic moments when they make huge achievements, but endeavor of everyday contributes to new understanding of the world.
