When l thought about working as a researcher, l always thought of a somewhat fixed daily routine. Well, this has not been the case in my lab. Every day begins differently, although some days are similar.
My usual day begins at 10:30 am. I don’t have to report to my lab manager every single morning unless all set targets have been completed. My project has many different components to it that require to be done over the course of the project. It incorporates preparation of different media to growing cells for different processes. Perharps the longest procedure l has had to repeat was the extraction of gDNA from cryptococus. I had a group of 57 specimens to process and only 18 could be properly processed in a day. The experience got better when some samples had to be redone for better results. After processing that entire sample, I feel like l can do the procedure has been deeply rooted in my memory.
My days in the perfect lab are full of exploration and discovery. I get the privilege of working independently and learning from many people in the lab. I look forward to everyday, mainly because i’m not doing the exact same thing as the previous day.
