This summer we were exposed to all sorts of scientists who all had incredible journeys to get to where they are today. I really enjoyed learning how they all got their start in science and hearing about their research. The speakers were inspirational in that they gave me direction in how I should direct my future if I want to get to where they are in the future. However, the most interesting talk to me was given by Dr. Sheila Patek.
Going into to the talk I thought she was going to talk about cheetahs or some other really fast animal. However, when she started to talk about sea creatures that move at magnitudes faster than any animal I can think of, I was impressed. What really got me interested in the talk was the fact that she incorporated physics and math into her research an created a whole new field of biology. I love physics and math along with the biological sciences, but I never knew that they could be incorporated together so easily. I was also impressed with how she discovered this new area as a post-doc and just continued on with the research. However, I believe the most impressive thing about her research is how she pioneered the entire field of incredible fast organisms and how they work. In all I believe Dr. Patek’s research is incredible. In addition to Dr. Patek, I would like to thank all the speakers who came and talked to us.
