Training in Oas Lab

By: Jonathan Grego

Oas lab, like I mentioned in my last post, is supposed to be more like a training program for future labs. Day to day operations are fairly consistent, and I’m always eager for new things to do.

Everyday, I get to work, check my email, go on my computer, open Mathematica and work on whatever assignment that I am presented or continue whatever I was working on the previous day. My work these past 2 weeks were usually fixing, improving, or understanding code in Mathematica, or getting lessons about the lab. The 1st week, I assisted my lab mates in collecting data for practice with the various machines we will be working with as well as reading papers based on my work.

One of the many errors I had to fix in Mathematica.

Kyle, one of the graduate students in the lab, prepares and gives me a lesson on the lab, it’s operations, Mathematica, or biochemistry in general daily. I also pay attention to what my coworkers are doing (also undergraduates) and ask questions on what they’re doing and learn why they’re doing what they’re doing in such faction. I will be doing “benchwork”, or active data collection/wet lab this coming week if not next week, and I cannot wait until I am able to do so! This will include observing the change in fluorescence over time with different concentrations of materials within biosensors. I enjoy working in Oas lab and learning more about it’s operations!
