Can Coronavirus Spread Through the Air?
Author: Beomhyeok Lee

A journal from Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America published on June 30th has found out that the airborne transmission route is “highly virulent and dominant” for the spreading of SARS-COV-2 virus.
Authors of this article have analyzed trends of confirmed infections and fatalities of COVID-19 in three epicenters of the outbreak—Wuhan City, Italy, and the New York City, focusing on how each location’s mitigation strategies might have influenced the transmission of the virus. After analyzing the results, they have concluded that mandated face covering was the crucial determinant in forming the pandemic trends among the three epicenters of COVID-19. Measures to introduce mandatory usage of face masks and other facial covering have significantly reduced the number of infections in Italy, by 78,000, and in New York City, by over 66,000. Authors of this article claim that mandatory face covering would be a highly cost-effective and efficient strategy, and it needs to be adapted by government agencies as the main factor of COVID-19 mitigation measures, along with other measures (e.g. physical distancing, quarantine and isolation, and mass testing).
