Blog Post 1

After a few setbacks, my first official day of work is tomorrow, Monday June 5th. Originally scheduled to start on May 29th, some miscommunication and a broken AC postponed my start. This delay was welcomed, since I had been out of the country for a few weeks.

On Wednesday morning I got ready for work. I packed my bag with my ipad, pens, a notebook, headphones, a water bottle, and a protein bar. Then my phone dingged. It was an email from my supervisor saying that the office AC had broken and everyone would be working from home the rest of the week while they fixed it. I found this completely reasonable, considering that it’s over 80°s in Miami and humid and sitting in a heated office would likely be unbearable.

Yet, I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed. I had done the physical prep of buying office clothes, packing my bag, practicing my drive to work, ect. Mentally preparing for this had also taken time. I had spent time visualizing my first day, what I would do, say, hear, see. I wanted to be as prepared as possible. While there was nothing that could be done, I still felt a little thrown off.

Now tonight, the night before my official first day, I am aiming to prepare myself again. Only this time I am a little more anxiety ridden. My ideas of what to expect have been dismantled by my canceled first week. I have so many questions. Being a type A planner has its perks, but it also has its drawbacks. I love to know everything, to be as prepared as I can possibly be, but I can’t be. I want to know where to park, what to wear, what I will do, what time is lunch, ect. All these questions sit in the back of my mind as I try to relax and go to sleep so I can rest before my first day.

Before my next blog post, where I will recount my first week, I am going to lay out my expectations. Tomorrow during my first day I am expecting to get trained in the basics, and simply get acquainted. Probably meet everyone at the company, hear the projects they are currently working on, get my desk, and overall observe. The following day I assume will put me to work. For my application I had to complete a test portfolio for a current client of theirs. This portfolio consisted of 12 instagram grid posts, 4 stories, and a photoshoot moodboard for a hotel. This was to test my creative skills, so that they could make sure I would be useful when helping on projects. One of the big skills I am hoping to learn more about is copywriting. I was told during my interview that that was a skill they were looking for, when I shared that I wasn’t experienced with it they said they appreciated my honesty and would be interested in training me. I am excited to learn and take you guys along as I start this new journey.
