"I am not a teacher, but an awakener"

The cornerstone of an effective mentoring relationship is establishing clear expectations, communication, and trust. The final goal is growth, in both the mentee and the mentor. It is important to realize that a mentoring relationship is fluid, will evolve and will take time. At the beginning of your time in the lab, we will spend time discussing your goals for the next phase of your training and how we can work together to achieve those goals within the framework of the lab. I strive to create a safe environment in which all lab members feel it is acceptable to fail and learn from their mistakes. I am very present in the lab and maintain almost daily communication with all lab members, in addition to individual weekly meetings. I have completed Advanced Mentor Training (Level 2) by Duke Office of Biomedical Graduate Education and participated as global mentor in several professional organizations (ARVO, ISER, SACNAS).
