The Following Opportunities are Available to Duke University Undergraduate Students

Science & Society

  • Certificate in Science and the Public
    • The Science & Society Certificate Program is an undergraduate, interdisciplinary course of study that integrates science with its relationship to society. The interdisciplinary curriculum enables students to understand the social, legal, historical, and policy issues stemming from research and technological advances in both basic and applied science
  • Digital Intelligence Certificate
    • Regardless of undergraduate discipline, all Duke University students’ futures will be influenced by the interrelationship between computation, data, technology, industry, governments, and society. The Digital Intelligence Certificate is an interdisciplinary pedagogical program that will prepare students for this complex future.
  • Focus Cluster: Science and the Public
    • The aim of this Focus cluster is to take a scholarly, interdisciplinary and, we hope, fun approach to science and technology and the ways in which they reach the public. Our cluster will be a cohort of four courses dedicated to various aspects of science’s place in the world, including: patient activism and advocacy; the development of laws and policies governing science; the relationship between science and the performing arts; and human-machine interfaces in the twenty-first century.

Trinity College of Arts and Sciences

  • Computational Media: Interdepartmental Major in Computer Science and Visual and Media Studies
    • The Departments of Art, Art History & Visual Studies, and Computer Science sponsor an interdepartmental major (IDM) and minor in Computational Media. This IDM is designed for students who want to combine deep theoretical and critical engagement with art, computation, and culture with substantive engagement with core computer science concepts and principles, undertaken alongside hands-on experience with computational media practice. Students interested in areas such as digital humanities, digital media and algorithmic arts, computer interface and experience design, game studies, digital storytelling and data journalism, information aesthetics, computational media ethics, global media studies and related topics will find the program of interest.
  • Major or Minor in Computer Science
    • Computer Science offers incredible opportunities as both a field of study and as a foundation for continued work in academic and professional areas. As an internationally recognized leader in research and education, our department enables undergraduates to take classes with renowned faculty, engage in cutting-edge research, and build a strong foundation for future study or work in a wide variety of fields.
  • Major or Minor in Visual & Media Studies
    • Visual & Media Studies concerns all aspects of the production, circulation, and reception of visual images in culture, science, and society. Studies in visual culture engage you in the analysis of the effectiveness of the signs and symbols that give meaning to images, providing access to how visual meaning is socially, politically, and culturally constructed and received.
  • Undergraduate Certificate in Information Science and Studies
    • We believe digital literacy and digital media authorship skills are core competencies for 21st century citizens, whatever paths they take in their lives and work. ISS Students come from a range of backgrounds and experiences. Some take individual courses, while others enroll in our Certificate program. This interdisciplinary program is especially relevant to students interested in digital and public humanities, library and information studies, computational media arts, and critical approaches to digital culture and computation, but serves students from around campus.
