Introductory Video
An introduction to the basic layout of Kumu, the social network mapping software used in this mapping project
Basics (0:00)-(0:19)
- Kumu is composed of maps and layouts or views, which control how the same data set is displayed. For our purposes, we will only be selecting different maps; the layouts will automatically change to the most appropriate option. Right now we are using the Home map
- The left pane gives information about a selection; this is the title screen of the map project. Toggle whether this is visible using the three vertical dots on the middle of the right edge.
- The view of the network map doesn’t automatically adjust, so if your map becomes uncentered, you can always click the Zoom Fit button (two arrows pointing towards each other) in the top right corner and the map will change size to fit the viewing window.
Information about Elements and Connections (0:20)-(0:45)
- Kumu calls actors or nodes Elements and represents them using circles. The color of the circle will signify different information based on what map is being used. To find out more about a given element, click on that element on the map. When the left pane is toggled on, that element’s information will show up.
- Kumu calls ties between Elements Connections and represents them using lines. The color of the line will signify different information based on what map is being used. If you hover your mouse over the connection, information about how those Elements are connected will pop up (Note: This information is also available under the “Description of Relationship” field when you click on a connection, but there was an error here that caused “N/A” to show up under this field. This has since been fixed).
- Similar to clicking on Elements, clicking on Connections will bring up information about the Connection when the left pane is visible.
Focus View (0:45)-(0:55)
- If you click on an Element then click on the focus view button (resembles a target) in the top right corner, you will enter focus mode, which shows you only the Element and its Connections.
- Clicking on the arrows on the top and bottom of the focus view button increases or decreases the chain of connections visible (Ex: pressing the up arrow shows direct Connections to an Element and Connections of that Element’s Connections)
- To exit this mode, click the focus view button again.
Changing Maps

Changing Maps (0:00)-(0:22)
- To change the look of the map to a different preset shape, click on the button in the upper middle of the screen that lists the name of the map (Note: do NOT change the view. The view will automatically switch to the most appropriate view for the map.
Timeline Map
How to use the timeline map on Kumu
Getting Started (0:00)-(0:13)
- Click the name of the current map you are using in the top middle and change the map to Stained University Timeline Map
- Use the tools from the Intro Video to help you with configuring the view the way that you want (here, we dismissed the left pane by clicking on the vertical line of three dots and used the zoom fit button to center the map, then clicked in any white space and dragged the map slightly upward so we could read the bottom portion)
- Notice that the Elements are color-coded by their Primary Association (Industry, Duke, Both or Other). The Connections are color-coded by the primary way those points are tied together (Ex: Employment, Trustee, etc).
Highlighting Different Time Periods (0:14)-(0:43)
- You will see a section at the bottom of the screen titled Time of interaction. This section features different decades.
- You can click on each of these decades to toggle them on or off. When a decade is toggled on, it will appear black and all of the Elements and Connections that were/are active in that decade will be in view on the map. When a decade is toggled off, it will appear grayed out and all of the Elements and Connections that were/are associated with that decade will also be grayed out on the map.
- You can toggle multiple decades on, and decades can be nonsequential (for example, we could turn on 1860s and 1990s at once).
Using Focus View (Not included in video but explained in the intro video)
- Click on an Element then click on the focus view button (resembles a target) in the top right corner. You will then enter focus mode, which shows you only the Element and its Connections (here, we used Louis Quin as an example).
- Clicking on the arrows on the top and bottom of the focus view button increases or decreases the chain of connections visible (Ex: pressing the up arrow shows direct Connections to an Element and Connections of that Element’s Connections)
- To exit this mode, click the focus view button again.
Circle Map
How to use the circle map on Kumu
Getting Started (0:00)-(0:14)

- Notice that the Elements are grouped by their Primary Association (Industry, Duke, Both or Other) and sorted within those groups by number of connections. The Connections are color-coded by the primary way those points are tied together (Ex: Employment, Trustee, etc).
Highlighting Different Connections (0:14)-(0:36)
- You will see a section at the bottom of the screen titled Connections Between Actors. This section features four options: Duke-Centric Connections, Industry-Centric Connections, Interrelated Connections, and Other Connections.

When a category is toggled off, it will appear grayed out and all of the Elements and Connections that are associated with that category will also be grayed out.
- You can toggle multiple categories on at once.
Using Focus View (0:37)-(0:46)
- Click on an Element then click on the focus view button (resembles a target) in the top right corner. You will then enter focus mode, which shows you only the Element and its Connections (here, we used Louis Quin as an example).

- Note: Kumu created these communities using social network analysis statistics that analyze how tied Elements are to one another. They are statistical communities, not necessarily organizational communities. Highlighting Different Connections (0:14)-(0:36)
