Research Assistants

 

Sydney Brown

Sydney Brown (she/her) is a rising junior at Duke Kunshan University majoring in Global Cultural Studies, World Literature. She began working on Women in Independent Publishing with Professor Stephanie Anderson in August 2023. She is interested in learning more about African American Literature, Victorian Literature, Medieval Literature, and poetry.

 

 

 

Sadey Dong

Sadey Dong is a world literature major at Duke Kunshan University. She published a piece of creative non-fiction with Sixth Tone, and her debut poetry collection I am safe as I am with Bookleaf. Her research interests lie in poetry and poetic space.

 

Zainab Farooqui 

Zainab Farooqui graduated from Duke Kunshan University with a Bachelor of Arts in Global Cultural Studies: World Literature. She is set to begin her Master of Arts at New York University this fall. Her research interests are the intersection of the relationship between gender, coming-of-age trajectories, and self-representation in Anglophone literature from the Global South. Farooqui focuses on women-authored literature and its polyvalent relationship to their socio-cultural environment and their readers. Currently, her research experience is specifically in areas of Brazil, India, Pakistan, and the United States. 

 

 

Momoko Mandere 

Momoko Mandere, an alumna of Duke University where she earned a BFA and Duke Kunshan University where she completed her BA, is currently furthering her education in Europe. She is pursuing a master’s degree in Media Art Cultures through the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, which has enabled her to engage in a joint master’s program across Austria, Denmark, and Poland. Currently residing in Denmark, Momoko’s research focuses on interactive media, conservation, human-computer interaction, and media arts.

 

Tess Redman

Tess Redman graduated from Duke University with a BA in Psychology. She will be taking part in the Disney College Program starting fall 2024.

 

 

 

 

Karen Nielsen

Karen Nielsen (she/her) graduated Duke Kunshan University in 2023 with an Ethics and Leadership Degree focused in Philosophy. She is currently the executive assistant and barn manager at Lindinhof Equine Sports Zentrum. Her interests include highlighting marginalized voices absent from the Philosophical Canon, working on interdisciplinary projects, and books.

 

 

Abby Wang 

Abby Wang is a junior student majoring in behavioral science and psychology at Duke Kunshan University. She joined Professor Stephen Anderson’s research team in January 2022 and has enjoyed working with her and her colleagues. Her research interests are centered on clinical psychology, specifically focusing on the role of pain perception in non-suicidal self-injury among adolescents.

 

 

 

 

Yilin Xu 

Yilin Xu (or Eileen), graduated from Duke Kunshan University with a BA in World Literature. Her research interests include female agency, women’s writing, and translation politics. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the Comparative Literature program at Emory University.

 

 

 

 

Flora Xu

Flora Xu is a rising senior at Duke Kunshan University, majoring in Global Culture Study, World Literature. She began to work with Prof. Anderson in 2023 summer. Her research primarily explores Chinese social media studies and Sino-Western cultural interactions. Her latest project investigates the expression of Chinese feminism in “Madness Literature” across various Chinese social media platforms. 

 

 

Xiaomeng Yan 

Xiaomeng Yan received her bachelor’s degree in Global Culture Studies from Duke Kunshan University in 2023. Her research interests lie in contemporary China, from the Mao Era to modernity after economic reform. She focuses on migrant workers, subaltern studies in postcolonial global orders, and East Asian popular cultures including films, novels, anime, and documentaries. 

 

 

 

Xiaoxi Zhu

Xiaoxi Zhu graduated from Duke Kunshan University, and did valuable work on this project.
