Collating – process of arranging papers sequentially; a mimeograph machine could not collate the way contemporary printers/copiers can, hence the prevalence of collating parties
Letterpress – the oldest method of printing; see this video for examples of letterpress printing
Linotype – a method of typesetting (see “Typesetting”) that utilizes metal characters (letters, numbers, etc.); watch this video from the National Museum of Industrial History to see how a linotype machine works
Lithograph – a printed piece of artwork that is created on metal or stone (“lithos” means “stone” in Greek) using specialized lithography tools
Mimeograph – an inexpensive copying machine utilized by many little magazines and small presses featured in this archive, as well as by their contemporaries; inspired the “mimeograph revolution,” although not all little magazines/presses during said revolution used an actual mimeograph machine; watch this video to see how a mimeograph machine works
Offset printing – a method of printing that gets its name from the process of transferring (i.e., offsetting) an inked image onto paper; watch this video to see how an offset press works
Perfect binding – a method of attaching the papers inside a book, utilizing adhesive (as opposed to staples, for example)
Platen press – a machine that utilizes a flat, vertical “bed” to print, as opposed to a cylinder, which is used in both cylinder and rotary presses
Stencil – a typed-up “master copy” used with a mimeograph; could also be created using cut and then used to draw on the paper, like an elementary school stencil (also shown in the mimeograph video)
Typesetting – formatting text (and illustrations, graphics, etc.) onto paper; see “Linotype” for one method of typesetting
Vandercook Proofing Press – a type of letterpress (see “Letterpress”); watch this video to see how the machine works
Vellum overlays – transparent card stock
Verityper (a.k.a. vari-typer) – an electric typewriter; the name comes from the machine’s ability to accommodate a “variety” of characters
