Eileen Myles edited and published the little magazine dodgems between 1977 and 1979. Although their little magazine only lasted two years, Myles has been an active artist for much longer. In 1983, Myles published I Like You by Richard Nassau through their company, fido productions. (Through fido productions, Myles also produced a video recording of a poetry reading entitled “Laundromat.”) Between 1984 and 1986, Myles worked as the artistic director of the Poetry Project. In 2019, “The Trip,” written and directed by Myles, was released on YouTube.

Myles has written 18 books, many of which are poetry anthologies; their collection also includes novels and a book of photography. Myles has won several awards for their work, like the Shelley Prize from the Poetry Society of America.

dodgems

dodgems was printed using a Xerox machine from Myles’s workplace. The name originated from Myles’s childhood. Otherwise known as bumper cars, dodgems were Myles’s “favorite ride in the amusement park in Revere Beach, Mass.” Issue 1 of the magazine was a photo of a group of nuns riding in the cars.

The first issue cost $750 to print, while the second cost $900. Neither issue was dated. Myles explained this choice as “[t]ime isn’t always important. 1977 seemed radiant then. It looked good.” The magazine included both prose and poetry, including Myles’s own work.
