Faculty Remarks:
I was lucky enough to be Shalini’s advisor for three years and her teacher in two different courses. Before we met each semester to discuss her courses for the following semester, I found myself prepping beforehand in a way I did for no other student. Shalini could be counted on to have more courses on her wish list than any one student could realistically take and they came from across the disciplines. If the effort to keep up with her agile and acquisitive mind made me a better advisor, then it made me a better teacher as well. Her capacity for original insight invariably brought some generally overlooked or undervalued literary detail or turn of phrase to my attention, renewing my own interest in the text at hand. Though ever a quiet and self-effacing student, I cannot but believe that she knew full well her capacity to make us all better readers. – Len Tennenhouse
