Hoof ‘n’ Horn: Lighting and Sound Designer
After taking an American Musicals class as a humanities elective in my first semester, I was inspired to get involved with musical theater at Duke and joined the production council of Hoof ‘n’ Horn, Duke’s student-run theater group. There was an opening for Lighting Designer for the fall production, so I decided to give it a shot.
As Lighting Designer/Board Operator, I was responsible for hanging and focusing lights, configuring software, designing and setting cues, and operating the light board during performances. I communicated and coordinated with the stage manager, sound team, and spotlight operator to ensure all technical aspects of the show ran smoothly.
I ultimately took this role for 2 productions in my first year: The Rocky Horror Show (Fall ’21) and Into the Woods (Spring ’22). Having little experience with technical theater when I started, it was one of the most difficult but exciting learning experiences I’ve had at Duke. In the Spring of 2023, I was the Assistant Sound Designer for RENT, co-produced with the Duke Theater Studies department.
