Special Online Talk
Basics of Copyright, Data and Software Intellectual Property
It has been said that content is king. Copyrighted works – whether writings, art, software, or media – are a major portion of the world’s creative, intellectual, and economic output. Interestingly, copyright issues are all around us, at all times, affecting artists, authors, software programmers, content creators and users alike.
Join intellectual property expert, Daniel Dardani, former MIT Technology Licensing Officer now Director of Physical Sciences and Digital Innovations Licensing and Corporate Alliances at Duke University, for an overview of copyright law with considerations of its history and relevance to the world of intellectual property. Daniel will explore topics including: the nature of originality, fair use, open source, licensing copyrights and data in the digital age, and more.
Be sure to tune in to this popular talk for a fun and fascinating look at the protection of your creative works whether developed at Duke, MIT, or elsewhere.
Research Town Hall
Open Scholarship: Addressing Incentives, Equity and Obstacles
Advancing knowledge and discovery through transparent, trusted, and accountable research requires novel research practices that make scientific processes, data, analyses, and publications accessible. At Duke, the commitment to open scholarship starts with supporting a research environment where open sharing is built in all stages of the research cycle.
Indeed, journals and funders are increasingly encouraging authors and awardees to share data on request or make it publicly available. Integrating open scholarship in each phase of the research cycle is meant to become the new way of conducting research by aligning the goal of accelerating discovery with the need to preserve and increase public trust in science.
Join the Duke Office of Scientific Integrity (DOSI) for this research town hall, where reputed scholars and scientists will discuss best strategies to incorporate open scholarship in research design, execution, data analysis, and dissemination of research results.
Attending this event for a minimum of 60 minutes fulfills the RCR-200 requirement for faculty and staff.
