Ronald Walsworth

Ronald Walsworth leads an interdisciplinary research group that develops precision measurement tools for applications across the physical and life sciences.

Professor Walsworth is a Minta Martin Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and in the Department of Physics at the University of Maryland (UMD).  He is also the Founding Director of the Quantum Technology Center (QTC), a cross-disciplinary center at UMD focusing on the translational applications of quantum science and education of the quantum technology workforce.  He has advised over 100 students and postdoctoral researchers, and has published nearly 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers.  He is an inventor on 14 allowed U.S. Patents, has co-founded five technology companies, and served as a scientific advisor for several others.  Walsworth received his B.S. in 1984 from Duke University, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1991.  From 1991 to 2020, he held research positions at the Smithsonian Institution.  From 2003 to 2019, he was also on the faculty at Harvard University.  He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS); serves as a Distinguishing Travelling Lecture for the APS Division of Laser Science; and received the Francis M. Pipkin Award from the APS in 2005.
