This experiment is the first assignment performed by students to review fundamental concepts of sensor identification, signal acquisition and processing, basic prototyping skills, and coding using a common microcontroller.
Student Outcomes
This module has been designed to incorporate the following skills development:
introduction to 3D printing
basic coding with Arduino
use of stepper motors and controllers
accelerometer sensing
experience with sensor drift and noise
introduction to data processing, statistical analysis, and uncertainty analysi
Project Overview
This first assignment related to Autonomous, Intelligent Machines and Systems is intended to review the basics of microcontrollers, sensors, data acquisition, and basic prototyping using 3D printing. These are concepts that are fundamental in most undergraduate Mechanical Engineering.
However, we understand that everyone has different experiences in college and may not have registered for courses that developed these skills. After this 1- to 2-week module, every student will have a working robot that they take home and can use for future experiments and code refinement.
This experiment introduces the foundational knowledge needed before students can perform the subsequent projects in this concentration: betaBOT, balanceBOT, armBOT.
