Javier Franco is a senior at Duke University with a major in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Energy Engineering. One of his biggest commitments during his time at Duke was being part of the school’s chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), which helped prepare him for networking and the recruiting process. He was able to attend the SHPE National Convention during Fall 2020, where he interviewed for Boeing and later received an offer to join them as an intern on the Environmental Control Systems (ECS) team for Summer 2021.
Ask me a question about this poster! Please send me an email.
How do you think your internship would have gone differently if it was in person? Do you think that would have made it a significantly more valuable experience?
I wish you could have experienced this internship in person! However, it seems like you were still able to accomplish a lot with your three projects and learn a lot. Hopefully, you’ll get to go back full time and see all of those planes in person!
I also love that you went in with networking goals, which can be very helpful when looking for a job after graduation! I wish you the best and thank you for sharing your experience with us!
This sounds like it was a great experience. It’s unfortunate you were not able to be in person, but it seems like you made the most out of the situation. How was your experience interacting with coworkers remotely? Was it much more difficult to connect or did you still have many opportunities since that would be a big part of an opportunity like this?
This sounds like it was a great experience and that you were able to take full advantage even with the unfortunate timing with the pandemic. How was connecting with your coworkers? Was it much more difficult to connect with them or did you have plenty of opportunities to talk since I would think that is a big part of the opportunity you had?
How do you think your involvement with Boeing will impact your career as an engineer in the future?
Javier! I love aircraft like crazy, I’m crying!!! I’m really inspired knowing you interned at an aircraft company like Boeing because I was searching for such opportunity. I would be glad if we could connect.
Also, does Boeing have other departments apart from the Environmental Control Systems opened for internship?
I would really love to connect, Javier
Hey, Javier,
Would you mind sharing what specific classes prepared you for an internship like this. I’m really interesting in computational fluid dynamics, but I don’t know what classes to take to learn more about it. Also, I’m not sure how I can get involved on campus outside of class. So I guess I’m also asking what extracurriculars you participated in that were applicable to or prepared you for your work with Boeing.
Id also like to know what career you plan to pursue specifically, and what career paths you’ve co wider pursuing with your mechanical engineering degree. I’m definitely considering taking a similar path, so any advice or guidance would be helpful.
Thanks!
