Supporting Education in D.C. and Chicago During COVID-19



Kait Boncaro completed a 10-week internship at Turning The Page. She engaged with policy related to elementary schools in D.C. and Chicago during the COVID-19 pandemic, and worked to facilitate the transition to online learning for families and parents.

  1. Wow- this is really important work! I have been thinking a lot about how this pandemic will exacerbate existing inequalities in education, and I’m glad that there are people and organizations working on these issues!

  2. The community assistance needed to bridge the gap of the inequities requires a fair amount of funding, I’d imagine. In order to give this assistance to a larger population, where do you think the money would come from (that could actually pass / be implemented)?

Your passion for racial and educational equity is inspiring, and it is wonderful to see the positive impact that TTP made in communities most deeply affected by the pandemic. I had a similar thought as Luke, so I look forward to hearing your response. I was also wondering what YOU would like to see change in our current educational system to bridge the gap in access to technology, adequate teaching, and extracurricular opportunities. The statistics on participation in remote learning activities caught my eye as well. How do you think teachers and families can boost the morale and motivation in students that are required to attend school remotely?

  5. This pandemic has definitely called attention to and exacerbated how disparities in socioeconomic status affect people. It’s interesting to hear about how the BLM movement impacted the work you were already doing. Thank you for the work you’ve done to help families and communities through an incredibly trying time.
