Join a Duke Study of how smoking withdrawal impacts the brain of adults with chronic pain

Researchers at the Duke University Medical Center are studying how withdrawal from smoking changes brain activity in adults with and without chronic pain.
We will compare the brains of adult males and females over 21 years of age who smoke and have chronic pain, with those who smoke and do not have chronic pain, through MRI scans, sensory tests, and surveys.
We hope to develop new, healthier, treatments for adults who want to quit smoking.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?
- Attend up to 5 visits at Duke University Medical Center over 2 months
- One study visit will include screening surveys, urine and breath tests, and sensory testing
- Two study visits will include:
- MRI scans of the brain
- Participation in additional sensory tests
- Health surveys
- Two visits will include very brief check-ins
- During the final week, participants will earn money by seeing how long they can go without smoking
All study visits take place at:
ELIGIBILITY
Candidates may be eligible if they:
- Are men or women 21 to 65 years of age
- Have chronic low back pain, or no chronic pain
- Currently smoke cigarettes
