Do I need to have prior experience?
No, but a sense of adventure and a desire to be outdoors is encouraged! We welcome members of all skill levels. We will do our best to teach you new skills, whether you’ve scaled Everest or have never slept outside.
How much does it cost?
See the Join page.
How often do you take out trips?
We do our best to take out 1-2 trips per weekend. The more interest and leaders we have, the more trips we can lead!
How do I sign up for trips?
Every Monday, we will send out an email to the Listserv. This will outline upcoming trips and events, and links to sign-up sheets will be provided.
Who leads trips?
Anyone can! Trips are organized weekly by all members of the club and are generally open to all. Many of our trip leaders are highly-skilled climbers, mountain bikers, and backpackers, but if you feel like you have the skills and are open to the challenge, you can lead a trip of your choosing!
How can I organize a trip?
- Come up with an idea – could be something outing has done before or something totally new!
- Let someone know about it! – email the president or VPs by at least the Sunday before the trip with your trip idea
- We’ll work with you to get other club members stoked on your trip and help you organize gear and funding
- Go on the trip! that’s it!
Do I have to go on every trip?
I’m glad you love the trips so much, but you absolutely do not need to sign up for every trip.
Where do you go?
Wherever you want to go! We have a list of frequent destinations that range from the Duke forest to the Appalachians to the Outer Banks, but we are always open to suggestions if there is somewhere you’ve been dying to go. Additionally, we go to West Virginia for our annual Fall Break trip and have the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world for a Dream Trip once every 3-4 years.
How is Outing Club different from Outdoor Adventures?
We are a separate, entirely student-run organization. We are committed to fostering a lasting community of students that interact both during trips and on campus. We also field traveling teams that compete in competitive events such as rock climbing, mountain biking, and almost anything else outdoorsy our members would like to competitively do that isn’t offered by other club sports.
If you want to go on a single trip in order to “get a feel” for the outdoors, consider taking a trip with Outdoor Adventures to see if it’s for you. If you plan on taking a few trips off campus this year and would like to join an active community of outdoors enthusiasts, visit our Join page to see how you can get involved!
