This year’s project will focus on initiatives that are aligned with to the quality and strategic plan. Categories for projects should fall into one of the following categories: Quality Nurse Sensitive Indicators (i.e. CLABSI, CAUTI), Falls, Well-being or Resiliency, or Workplace Violence or Incivility. Individual nurses or nursing teams, including nurse leaders, are encouraged to apply.

Program Overview
The Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Fellowship is a 12-month, mentorship program in which nurses, and other healthcare disciplines, develop a project related to the strategic plan of Duke University Health System. Applications for this competitive fellowship opportunity are reviewed by Nursing Leadership and the EBP Fellowship Committee. The program blends the applicant’s EBP knowledge with classes on literature review and other levels of evidence, project development, implementation, and dissemination. The Fellows are mentored in each of these steps by DUHS’s Director Nursing Research and EBP, Dr. Hutch Allen, DUHS’s Nursing Program Manager for EBP, Dr. Kerri Dalton, and the other members of the committee.

Program Purpose
Teach nurses how to apply the steps of EBP
• Identifying the problem
• Search for the best available evidence
• Critically appraise the evidence
• Integrate the evidence with clinical expertise and patient/family preferences and values
• Evaluate outcomes
• Disseminate the findings
Stimulate innovative thinking that can improve patient and family outcomes
Foster professional growth and development of nurses

Eligibility Criteria
• At least 1-year employment at DUHS
• Employed at 0.60 FTE or more
• Interest in learning about the use of EBP
• Consider those who have completed an EBP workshop series, such as the DUHS Mitigating the Madness EBP Workshop Series

Additional requirements
• Identified by the unit manager/supervisor as a team player with good written and verbal communication and good interpersonal skills and who demonstrates a performance evaluation that meets or exceeds expectations. Manager Approval is an important part of your application.
• Agree to work with their mentor to establish a timeline listing specific tasks associated with completing their project; meet with the mentor monthly.
• Please review the eligibility criteria before meeting with your unit manager/supervisor. Confirm their support and approval before submitting this application.
