Academics

Preparing the next generation of environmental leaders to manage, finance, and conserve the world’s natural resources.

Innovative Education for a Sustainable Future

At the Natural Resources Finance Initiative (NRFI) at Duke University, education lies at the heart of our mission. Our academic programs combine finance, environmental science, and policy to prepare students for impactful careers in natural resources management, conservation, and sustainable business.

Through the Master of Forestry (MF), Master of Environmental Management (MEM), NRFI Track, and PhD in Environment, students gain the analytical tools, practical experience, and interdisciplinary perspective needed to navigate complex sustainability challenges.

NRFI’s educational philosophy emphasizes:

  • Hands-on learning through applied research and field experience.

  • Interdisciplinary collaboration across Duke’s schools and programs.

  • Financial and policy innovation as drivers of sustainable environmental outcomes.

Our students graduate prepared to lead — whether in conservation organizations, government agencies, the private sector, or academia.
