Pre-Summit Request

Prior to the Summit we ask founders and current leaders of new universities to share brief summaries of their own views on lessons learned. Sharing your unique university and leadership experience will inform our program design and dialogue in Washington and the report that we issue. We invite you to be candid as you reflect on lessons you have learned. Your peers, others who wish to start a new university, and the higher education community will benefit from your wisdom and your institution’s story. Responses will not be published and will only be seen internally by the summit leadership team. Your input will be instrumental shaping our upcoming time together.

In the Pre-Summit Lessons Learned Reflection you will respond to the following questions by March 15, 2024 in one of three ways:

  1. A two-page written response,
    OR
  2. A self-recorded video with transcript,
    OR
  3. A 30 – 45 minute virtual interview via Zoom.

When you register for the Summit, you will select the format in which you would like to submit your reflection, and we will follow up with more information. Each format will use the same five questions, which are listed below to help you prepare.

Lessons Learned Prompts

The lessons learned reflection will consist of your response to the 5 numbered questions below. Please feel free to take your response in a direction most relevant for your institution.

  1. What was the impetus for creating your institution? What problem is your institution trying to solve, why, and for whom?
  2. What lessons have you and your institution learned about how to create a new and distinctive university?
  3. What lessons have you and your institution learned about creating new, high-quality forms of transformative undergraduate education including learning and pedagogy, curricular and co-curricular design, and faculty incentives and culture?
  4. What lessons does your new university offer for higher education writ large? For established universities, governments, foundations, and others?
  5. Is there anything else you would like to add, and do you have any questions?
