Radiation causes damage to the human body in several ways. One of the most interesting types of damage is radiation’s ability to cause cancer. Basically, radiation transfers electrons to cellular molecules such as DNA, which promotes the development of mutations, or changes in the structure of DNA. The DNA mutations then trigger uncontrollable cell growth and division, causing tumors to form. In order to understand how this happens, it is useful to review briefly the basic concepts of DNA.
