Teaching

Teaching college-level mathematics is another of my passions. In addition to my mathematics coursework and research, I am also progressing toward completing Duke’s Certificate in College Teaching to systematically improve my pedagogy.

During my undergrad, I was lucky enough to have multiple teaching opportunities. The first was being a drop-in tutor at Berkeley’s Student Learning Center, and the second was working as a student instructor for two sophomore level math classes: Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, and Discrete Mathematics.

Graduate Positions:

Instructor of Record for Math 112L Calculus 2

  • Gave lectures to a class of 25 students, which included writing homework and exams, holding office hours, grading exams, organizing labs, and assigning grades
  • Collaborated with another instructor on managing the teaching work throughout the semester

Discussion Section Leader for Math 202D Multivariable Calculus for Economics

  • Managed in-person discussion sections where I would design worksheets and activities for students to complete. Students would have to present their work to the rest of the class
  • My high-quality explanation of topics and control of the classroom earned me the L.P. & Barbara Smith Award for Promise of Teaching Excellence

Lab Teaching Assistant for Math 111L Calculus 1

  • Managed in-person lab sessions where students would randomly group up to work on a provided worksheet together on a whiteboard
  • Collaborated with another TA to manage the room and answer student questions

Undergraduate Positions:

Undergraduate Student Instructor for Math 55 Discrete Mathematics

  • Held in-person discussion sections, which involved designing blackboard lessons, giving mini-lectures, quizzes, and encouraging group-work
  • Position required 20 hours/week

Undergraduate Student Instructor for Math 54 Linear Algebra and Differential Equations

  • Held the only virtual discussion sections during an in-person semester, which meant adapting in-person lessons to a virtual format and figuring out ways to foster collaboration between students over Zoom
  • Successfully retained over 70% participation from my whole section in virtual group activities, despite never taking attendance
  • Position required 20 hours/week

Drop-In Tutor for Student Learning Center

  • Virtually tutored for Probability, Discrete Math, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Multivariable Calculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2
  • Received professional diversity training catered toward math education
