Undergraduates

Overview:

The Directed Reading Program pairs an undergraduate with a graduate student mentor. You’ll explore a topic in mathematics, with your mentor’s guidance, for one semester. You and your mentor will be matched based on shared mathematical interests. The DRP provides a more casual and flexible learning environment for undergraduate students than traditional courses; DRP projects are not for course credit and do not have a grade associated with them.

All students are welcome to participate in the DRP, regardless of mathematical background, coursework, or academic performance. We especially encourage students from groups historically underrepresented in (or excluded from) mathematics to apply. Here is the application form. Applications for Fall 2024 are due at 12:00pm noon on Oct 5th.

Format:

You’ll meet with your mentor once a week for one hour. Outside of meetings, you’ll be expected to do 2-3 hours of reading/study on your own. There will typically be an end-of-year event with food, where you’ll present what you learned and socialize with your peers in the program.

Benefits:

  • Learn about a mathematical topic you’re interested in,
    in a low-pressure environment.
  • Connect with mathematics graduate students.
  • Develop mathematical communication skills.

The Directed Reading Program and/or your mentor will provide any books or materials you’ll need for the project. Many books are available through the Duke Library.
