Austin: Nino is going to talk to us today about Georgian Independece Day, what Georgian Independece means and why is it important to Georgia. First off thank you for being here, I think probably a lot of our listeners and readers know close to nothing at all about Georgia which makes this a great learning opportunity.

Nino: Yes, thank you for having me. I’m happy to be here. So for people who have never heard of the country, or for those who only know of the US state that shares its name, Georgia is a small country in the Caucasus neighboring Armenia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Russia, next to the Black Sea.

Nino: Georgians like to pride themselves in saying that they have ancient history, so just to give a really brief breakdown of it, the first trans-Georgian or proto-Kartvelian goes back to the King Pharnavaz which was in third century BC who was also credited for creating the Georgian alphabet, though that is contested. Kartvelian is another word for the Georgian language. In Georgia then came the adoption of Christianity in the fourth century and then the golden age for the Kingdom of Georgia was the strongest was under King Tamar, which was a woman under the title of King in the 12th century. And then it was back and forth between different empires mostly Persians and then Ottomans, and then the Russian empire comes in the beginning of the 19th century. And the last 200 years have sort of centered around that relationship between the Georgian and the Russian empire.

There was a brief moment of Independece, after the Bolshevik revolution in 1917 since the Caucasus was sort of freed up due to Lennin’s politics, during that time. Georgia declared Independece in 1918, but this Independece was cut short by the invasion of the red armies in 1921 which turned Georgia into a Soviet state. After which the Independece was regained in 1991, on the 9th of April. Curiously enough though, Independece Day is celebrated only on the May 26 which represents the declaration of the first Democratic Republic in 1918.

Austin:  That is a very rich history, Georgia has been part of all these empires throughout history and just now started to be its own country. So I want to start by asking how important is Georgian Independece Day?
