Program Focus

  • Using Visual Arts and Design to Support Student Learning in Nassau is a collaborative DukeEngage program between students and faculty from Chrysalis International Development, the University of The Bahamas, Seemore Global, and Bahamian K-12 educators, with the goal of furthering understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, using design tools and processes, to create lesson plans that will improve the learning experience for students in Nassau, who are engaging in remote learning in a context of unreliable internet service.

Food Insecurity in Nassau

The Bahamas imports about 80 percent of its food annually. For every dollar spent by tourists, approximately 85 cents are allocated to food importation. As a result, educational programs, infrastructure, and other investments in the public sector have not received adequate resources or attention. Through a partnership with the University of The Bahamas, Professor Harris and a team of undergraduate and graduate students from Duke University traveled to Nassau to study the Bahamian food system and its relationship to inequality in The Bahamas.
