- R03: Small Grant Program
R03 will support small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources. You can request a project period of up to 2 years and a budget for direct costs of up $50,000 per year. Can not be renewed.
- R21: Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award
R21 is intended to encourage exploratory/ developmental research by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of project development. You can request a project period of up to 2 years and combined budget for direct costs for the 2 year project may not exceed $275,000. Can not be renewed.

Research Career Development Awards
- K01: Mentored Research Scientist Career Development Award
The purpose of this program is to provide support and protected time for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences leading to research independence.
Eligibility: US citizen or permanent resident, with research or clinical doctoral degree
- K08: Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award
The purpose of this program is to prepare clinically trained individuals for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. This program provides support and protected time for an intensive, supervised research career development experience in the fields of biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research, including translational research.
Eligibility: US citizen or permanent resident, with a clinical doctoral degree
- K23: Mentored patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award
The purpose of this program is to support the career development of individuals with a clinical doctoral degree, who have the potential to develop into productive, clinical investigators, and who have made a commitment to focus their research endeavors on patient-oriented research.
Eligibility: US citizen or permanent resident, with clinical doctoral degree, and completed clinical training
- K99/R00: Pathway to Independence Award
The purpose of this program is to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented, NIH supported, independent investigators. This program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of outstanding postdoctoral researchers or clinician-scientists from mentored research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions, and to provide independent NIH research support during the transition that will help these individuals launch competitive, independent research careers.
Eligibility: US citizen or non-citizen, with research or clinical doctoral degree and no more than 4 years of post-doc research experience.

American Society of Nephrology
The ASN Foundation Career Development Grants Program provides funding for young faculty to foster evolution to an independent research career and a successful application for a NIH full R01 grant or equivalent. By the end of the grant period, a recipient will have an independent research career and be competitive for federal and non-federal funding.

The goal of Ben. J Lipps Research Fellowship Program is to fund nephrology fellows to conduct original meritorious research projects. This program will foster the training of fellows, under the direction of a sponsor, who are highly motivated to make contributions to the understanding of kidney biology and disease.

American Heart Association
Supports highly promising healthcare and academic professionals, in the early years of one’s first professional appointment, to explore innovative questions or pilot studies that will provide preliminary data and training necessary to assure the applicant’s future success as a research scientist.

To enhance the integrated research and clinical training of postdoctoral applicants who are not yet independent. The applicant must be embedded in an appropriate research group with the mentorship, support, and relevant scientific guidance of a research sponsor.

Institutional Grants
Department of Medicine provides resources through the Chair’s Research Award to fund junior investigators in the Department of Medicine who are making the transition to becoming independent scientists and planning for their first extramural funding.
Eligibility: Junior faculty within 2 years of completing fellowship or PhD post-doctoral scientists transitioning to new faculty in the Department of Medicine
