Teaching Assistant, The Purpose Project at Duke (Fall 2022) – 3 openings

The Purpose Project at Duke is seeking three Teaching Assistants for Fall 2022 to grade students’ written reflections for the Common Experience course for first-years, which is part of the What Now? Network. The What Now? Network offers a cluster of first-year seminars that engage students in questions of purpose, meaning, and what it means to lead a good life. In addition to participating in a seminar taught by a Duke faculty member, students also take the What Now? Common Experience course, which offers them the opportunity to engage with faculty and fellow students in reflective conversations and activities about topics related to cultivating one’s purpose and various aspects of well-being. Students write brief weekly reflections (250-300 words) on their Common Experience activity. For information about the What Now? Network, see the program webpage.

Responsibilities of the Teaching Assistants are to:

  • Grade approximately 100 reflections each week, evaluating primarily for completion
  • Flag any reflections for further follow up by Purpose Project staff
  • Input grades into Sakai
  • Inform supervisor of weekly progress
  • Provide feedback on reflection prompts, based on level and quality of student engagement

Time commitment: 5-6 hours per week, starting September 2022 + 1 hour training at beginning of semester

Compensation: $3050 (half-time)

Qualifications:

  • Masters or doctoral student in any discipline is welcome to apply, but preference will be given to student in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
  • Employment and compensation must not conflict with any current fellowships or departmental assignments/policies. DGS approval is required, and applicants must indicate that their DGS is aware that they are applying at the time of application. The Purpose Project team will reach out to the DGS of applicants selected for an interview.
  • Interest in holistic student development and understanding of the various challenges undergraduates face, particularly at Duke.
  • Prior experience with grading written assignments a plus.
  • Previous experience working on a team. Ability to manage completion of tasks without close supervision and to communicate with supervisor about any issues in a timely manner.
