AFRICA THROUGH THE EYES OF AFRICANS PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

BACKGROUND

“Africa Through the Eyes of Africans” will tell the rich story of the African continent by none other than its own: Africans. Africa is often portrayed in the media and spoken about as a continent of hopelessness and helplessness. This project, created by Judith Mwobobia, a student in Duke’s Master of Science in Global Health program and a native of Kenya, provides Africans the opportunity to own their story through pictures and show not only what Africa is, but what it offers across its 54 countries

The purpose of this competition is to broaden the perspectives of global health students and others by chipping away at the prejudices they may have due to stereotypical and negative images of Africa in the media. By showing a more representative and well-rounded view of Africa, we hope to challenge future global health leaders to think about and see a broader and more open-minded view, and way of thinking, about the communities they work in now, and will, in their current and future careers. 20 images will be selected from all the submissions and each of these winning submissions will receive $100.
