Summer IOR Opportunities for PhD Students
The offices of Undergraduate Education and Interdisciplinary Studies are offering course development grants for Summer 2022 to improve the range of consistently taught summer courses that meet the curricular needs of undergraduates, and that will be taught by PhD students as instructors of record (IORs.) Note: proposals must come from the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) of a sponsoring unit that provides an undergraduate major, minor, or certificate and include a sponsoring faculty member. The hosting department, program, or unit has to agree to offer the class in Summer 2023, and the class has to be a useful addition to an undergraduate curriculum that can be repeated year after year (hopefully with PhD students as IORs.) Again, any school, department or other unit that offers an undergraduate major, minor (in Trinity or Pratt) or certificate (Trinity, Pratt) can apply.
- Summer 2022: support to develop the course, including not just syllabus construction, but also resources such as asynchronous modules and frameworks for assignments. The program includes engagement with Duke Learning Innovation and other PhD students developing (or redesigning) summer courses.
- Summer 2023: teach the course (if feasible)
Interested? Talk to the DUS or equivalent in the department or program that would offer the class and discuss possible course topics that would 1) meet curricular priorities and have potential for high enrollment, and 2) could be handed off year after year.
Although the application has to come from the leadership of a given department or other unit, you can motivate this process by entrepreneurially making connections and letting faculty know that you are interested in developing and teaching a summer course.
