Andrea Ryan

I studied psychology in a cognitive computations lab at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. After graduating in 2016 with B.S. degrees in Psychology and Anthropology, I went to work in a cognitive computational neuroscience lab at Brown University in Providence, RI. While my work focused on the science of learning and decision-making, I sustained a personal interest in how internal and external emotional expression forms across development, particularly in children with histories of trauma. Driven by this curiosity, I joined a developmental psychology lab at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC. Now, I’m pivoting away from a career in psychology toward a study of history. I’m particularly interested in the macro-to-micro crisscross of public policies and personal life. I am eager to study these “little moments” of intersection through accounts of daily life (diaristic and especially photographic). As I focus (mainly) on the United States over the last century, I’m excited to pull from disciplines including photojournalism, public policy, art history, social documentary, history, microhistory, and more. My personal interest is what’s known as the homefront – those who hold the nation together during times of war. On a personal note, I have lived in 6 states, and I hope to see all of our National Parks one day. When I’m not trying to learn more, I spend time on my back porch drinking tea, listening to nature, and creating increasingly unhinged honorifics for my pit bull Pumpkin.
