Traveling to and around Duke

Transportation & Parking at Duke

For Duke-affiliated conference participants, plan to park in your usual lot on campus and either ride a Duke bus or walk to the Rubenstein Library.

Walking directions from Abele Quad bus stop to the Holsti-Anderson Family Assembly Room

Conference participants whose accommodations have been arranged by APSI may ride a shuttle provided by the hotel; sign-up may be required.

Visitors to Duke coming from around the Triangle are encouraged to use public transit whenever possible. GoDurham buses are free for all riders through June 2026; GoTriangle buses that come to Durham from Raleigh and Chapel Hill offer a $5 daily pass. Discounts are available for university faculty and staff as well as seniors and those with disabilites. Advance registration may be needed to take advantage of discounted fares. All public buses in the Triangle make use of the contactless Umo app.

Parking on campus for all non-Duke affiliates is available on a first-come, first-serve basis in the visitor section of Parking Garage IV, which uses a timed entry ticket system, and the Bryan Center surface lot, which uses the BlueSpot hourly parking system as well as PayByPhone. We recommend arriving early as these spaces tend to fill quickly on weekdays during the academic year.

Parking in all visitor spaces costs $2 per hour.

Park with Blue Spot

Parking at Duke via Blue Spot is convenient, easy and secure, allowing you to begin and extend your parking session from anywhere on campus. Vehicle details and receipts are only saved for registered users.

Blue Spot was developed in 2025 for the Duke community by a partnership between Duke Parking and Transportation, Duke OIT and Duke Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Blue Spot allows you to extend your parking session from anywhere on campus.

To purchase parking via Blue Spot:
  • Scan the QR code on any Blue Spot sign located in the lot or visit bluespot.duke.edu/hourly
  • Select your location from the drop down menu or search by typing in the menu
  • Log in with Duke NetID or OneLink or continue as guest
  • Provide required information (registered users will have their information saved and auto-filled upon sign-in)
  • Complete payment using CyberSource (note: each transaction, including extensions, will incur a $0.15 service charge)

Other visitor parking options include the Science Drive visitor lot, some on-street spaces along Towerview Drive, and the Science Drive garage. All of these require payment; there are no free parking options on campus.

Duke regularly enforces its parking regulations via tickets (and sometimes towing), so we encourage visitors to plan accordingly. Any specific questions about parking can be sent to APSI staff.

Air travel

For guests flying in to Durham, RDU is the closest airport to Duke University. Travel from the airport by taxi/rideshare or rental car typically takes between 25 and 40 minutes, though this can vary due to rush hour traffic and construction.

The estimated one-way fare for a taxi or rideshare is $40–$60 before tip (15%–18% is customary), depending on time of day.

Staying near Duke

Lodging for non-local visitors has been arranged in advance by APSI at the Marriott Residence Inn

Hotel address:

1108 W. Main St.
Durham, NC 27701

For conference participants staying at the hotel, a shuttle will be available on Friday morning. To help us coordinate the transportation schedule, please sign up for an available time.

On Saturday morning, the hotel cannot provide a shuttle, so we recommend taking the C1 Duke bus.

The terminus on East Campus is roughly a 8–10-minute walk from the hotel (first map).

On weekends, buses depart roughly every 10 minutes; it is a 7–10 minute ride to the Abele Quad (West Campus) terminus.

Once you disembark, it is a 2-minute walk to the Holsti-Anderson room (second map).

Dining

Meals listed on the schedule are provided to conference speakers. Attendees are asked to bring (or purchase) their own lunch. Everyone is invited to the on-site reception on Friday evening.

All other meals are at participants’ own discretion. APSI has developed a custom map featuring recommendations for dining options around Durham.

Internet

Duke University is part of the global eduroam network. Visitors from other universities should check with their home institution to make sure their devices are properly configured in advance to connect to eduroam.

Visitors without access to eduroam can also make use of the free “Duke Visitor” wi-fi network while on campus.

Getting around

On campus, Duke provides a bus network that serves specific destinations. Visitors can ride these buses for free to access various parts of campus and adjacent areas in Durham. A Duke ID is not needed.

To travel further afield, public transit is available. GoDurham buses are fare-free through June 2026; all public buses in the Triangle make use of the contactless Umo app.

Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft are another option for local transportation. Metered taxis are uncommon in Durham.

Duke mobile app

We recommend that visitors as well as members of the Duke community download the Duke Mobile app, at least for the duration of your time on campus.

The app includes access to searchable campus maps and other useful information.
